    1. Macmillan Farrar,Straus and Giroux, purchased the rights for my husband Georg Rauch s war memior last November Til now the Audio rights have been purchased by Blackstone Audio and most recently the Italian rights were also purchased Of course, this is all very exciting for me, the co author and translator from the original German I recently re read the book while proofing the copy edited ms, and noted that I still laugh, cry, hold my breath, and and am totally engrossed by this book It comes out [...]

    2. Wow This book touched my heart and opened my eyes to a whole new perspective NOTE please read my content warning at the bottom before reading this book.Okay So Georg is a Jew fighting as a German soldier Actually, 3 4 German, 1 4 Jewish In my head whether subconscious or conscious I always thought of the German soldiers as evil, cruel monsters with no heart They worked for Hitler they superintended the mass genocide of millions of Jews they were beasts I know, sounds really judgmental, right BUT [...]

    3. I really liked this book Before reading this book I hadn t really known anything about WWII besides from the Allies point of view I hadn t really known what it would ve been like to be is Hitler s army The book starts off in Vienna, Germany Georg Raunch, author auto bio has just been picked for a Draft and is dreading what will happen in the future of his military life The book is full of amazing stories of survival, action, and suspense It is a great book for anyone looking for information abou [...]

    4. Sculptor husband and I really loved this one Surprising upbeat memoir of quarter Jewish, highly resourceful Austrian boy, Georg Rauch, a German foot soldier up front about his Jewishness, who was no Nazi but swept up in history as likely others of his countrymen were during WWII Tells a story I hadn t heard before Georg became an artist and moved to Mexico after the war and only recently died His wife translated his story Great narrative, grippingly told, featuring the actual letters Georg wrote [...]

    5. First off I really enjoyed this book As soon as I read the title, I was interested I mean seriously, a Jewish soldier in Hitler s army How His name is George Rauch He has helped his mom store many hidden Jews in their attic I myself cannot relate to him at all He was drafted into the military at the age of 18 as a Jew He was a soldier in the infantry I really liked how the author used a copious amount of adjectives to describe the life he faced as a young soldier and the conflicts he had encount [...]

    6. Rauch builds a riveting tale of his time spent in the German Army during WWII and as a POW in Russia This tale of suffering and survival is rather compelling and will keep a reader engaged throughout, especially the post war period as Rauch attempts to return to home and family.

    7. A great account of WWII It was really interesting to see the side of the German solider instead of the allied solider I also really liked reading about the eastern front as I haven t looked into it as much as the western front.

    8. 4.5, really gripping telling, and I was constantly shocked throughout the book that this was a work of non fiction.

    9. The book Unlikely Warrior is about how a thirteen year old boy is serving in Hitler s army But what shocked everyone was that Georg Rauch has Jewish relatives His parents have been hiding Jews in their attic since the war got bad The story is split into 3 parts, his training camp experience is part one, part two is his crazy experience in the labor camps and how he felt, part three was was his long journey back to his home town to see if hoping his family is alive and all well.

    10. In this book the main character, Georg Rauch, is also the author The book is set all over Europe throughout the whole book during World War II The main conflict is him just trying to make it through the war alive so he can go back home in Vienna, Austria WWII has always fascinated me, and this book was a really good account of a young man s journey through a war he never wanted to fight just to make it home safe after so much hardship, perseverance, and fighting. One thing I really liked was how [...]

    11. Although he and his mother helped hide Jewish refugees in their Vienna attic and the author himself had Jewish ancestry, nevertheless, he was drafted into the German army in 1943 He was assigned duties as a telegraph operator, and as the army made its way to Russia, the book contains many humorous scenes about food, cooking, and connections with other soldiers But the book also contains scenes of horror as the men endured extremely cold conditions without adequate clothing and often subsisted on [...]

    12. My 11 yr old son brought this book home from a school book fair He s at the age where he s becoming aware of the world history and World War II is a topic of interest so we decided to read it together.Georg Rauch s memoir doesn t sugar coat the horrors of war he faced as young 19 year old drafted into the German Army toward the end of the war and forced serve on the Russian front Told in vivid detail, the story certainly puts the reader in the heart of the action and if it hadn t been a memoir, [...]

    13. George Rauch s account of his time as a soldier in the German army is agonizing His letters home are detailed accounts of his battles with homesickness, enemy attacks, starvation, and exhaustion He recounts his despair as a Russian prisoner There are many personal, gut wrenching tales from this lovely, young man And to top it all off, one of his grandparents is Jewish It s odd that he was ever even accepted into the Army Still, as his mother does her part against the Nazi s back home, George pre [...]

    14. I really liked this book because it showed me what some people had to do to stay alive The main character, Georg, had to become a soldier to stay alive Also, it explained to me how people were treated during the war He had to march through snowy, blazing hot, and rainy days and nights He also had to kill innocent people or take away their homes at some points in the book I liked how this book showed me what people had to go through during hard times and what the soldiers did to stay alive He was [...]

    15. This book was a nice surprise Of course the title caught my attention right away, but I was pleased to find that the prose was a well written and captivating story It is unusual to hear about the Second World War from the German point of view, and even less usual to hear about it from a soldier with Jewish blood It is horrifying to think about what any soldier went through during this dark period of history, but Rauch speaks of his experiences with dignity Rather than simply a timeline of events [...]

    16. I really like this book It is really emotional to read how a normal Jewish boy fought his way to the end of World War II, as a Jewish soldier in Hitler s Army I almost cried when they told me how skinny he became after getting captured by the Russians Georg had really bad times such going for days without food in the freezing winter My favorite part is when Georg goes back home to his mother and sister I hated when the Russians captured a 17 year old boy and executed him I felt really bad for Ge [...]

    17. I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This was a pretty good book Different than many memoirs I have ever read Before this I didn t know much about the Eastern Front of Germans during WWII Now I feel like I know a little bit better what it was like and what they went through This book definitely makes you see that just because someone was in the German army doesn t mean they supported Hitler or the Nazi s I think that was a very important lesson that many people st [...]

    18. This book was unbelievable So much action and adventure that I thought was unreal The book shows a lot of detail and realistic events that I couldn t believe was true What I like most about this book is the plot of a one quarter Jewish boy who was fighting for a country that had declared war for no reason Other people should read this book because its a good source of education and has an anti war message.

    19. Pg 322.I rate this book 3 stars because it s about history of the Jews and Georg Rauch.Georg Rauch is the min character of this story.Rauch is a Jew soldier he was fighting for the Nazi. This story take place in Russia 1943.It remind me of Hitler and the Nazi.Rauch is a helpful person I can relate to him because I can be helpful sometimes.

    20. Everyone should read true accounts of this war So many lessons to learn This was a great book that touched me Interesting to read about the war through a German soldiers view, as he was forced to become involved in a war he did not agree with.

    21. What an amazing story Reading about those three years of his life puts your own life, your challenges and accomplishments, into context.

    22. This incredible story deserves to be told and read I found the journey of this young soldier fascinating, but I did get lost in some of the redundant details.

    23. As a wartime journal of a firsthand account of a German soldier at the front, this book is great As a Jewish book, it isn t even close as that element was completely missing.

    25. Dark and Light Water and Fire Good and Evil So often I find myself reducing the world to opposing pairs Dualities Contrasting concepts An Unlikely Warrior is the no mans land between the axis and allies Georg Rauch is an openly practicing Jew who is forcibly recruited into the ranks of the German Wehrmacht when Nazi forces invade his homeland of Vienna, Austria His superiors spare his life despite his professed religion, and he must maintain the charade of a model soldier in order to skirt certa [...]

    26. The main plot is that the German soldier the book focuses on is half a Jew He has a chance to become an officer but he decides that being a foot soldier is a better way It is not So the plot is him fighting the Russians on the eastern front and a bunch of his friends dies stuff like that He also loses his house when he comes back which is sad.The theme of this book is try hard and you will succeed In the beginning he tries really hard to make the war less hostile he cooks his food on stoves when [...]
